It was in CAERNARFON , in 1969, that Charles, the current heir to the throne, was invested as Prince of Wales, a ceremony which re-affirmed English sovereignty over Wales in this, one of the most nationalist of Welsh-speaking regions. Since 1282, when the English defeated Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last Welsh Prince of Wales, the title has been bestowed on heirs to the English (and then British) throne, but it wasn't until 1911 that the machinations of David Lloyd George - MP for Caernarfon and future prime minister - brought a theatrical investiture ceremony to the centre of his constituency: an odd move for a proto-nationalist considering the symbolic implications. Caernarfon's vastly imposing castle and near-complete rectangle of town walls make it an appealing place, but apart from the castle, there isn't too much to see: you can only walk a small section of the wall and the rest of the town has been ripped through by a main road and boxed in by modern buildings. That said, it's a spirited and lively town, is well situated on the Menai Strait, between the mainland and Anglesey, and has good bus connections to Llanberis and Snowdonia.
In 1283, Edward I started work on Caernarfon Castle (June-Sept daily 9.30am-6pm; April-May & Oct daily 9.30am-5pm; Nov-March Mon-Sat 9.30am-4pm, Sun 11am-4pm)
To the south, the Queen's Tower is entirely taken up by the numbingly thorough Museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers , while the Northeast Tower houses the Prince of Wales Exhibition , just outside which is the Dinorwig slate dais used for Charles' investiture.
A ten-minute walk along the A4085 Beddgelert road brings you to the western end of the Roman road from Chester, at Segontium Roman Fort (Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 2-5pm; Nov-March closes 4pm; free). The Romans occupied this five-acre site for three centuries from around 78 AD, though most of the remains are from the final rebuilding after 364. The ground plan is seldom more than shin-high and somewhat baffling, making the museum and displays in the ticket office pretty much essential.
Wales's newest narrow-gauge railway also starts in Caernarfon, just near the harbour on St Helen's Road. Ultimately, the Welsh Highland Railway (WHR, or Rheilffordd Eryri) will run all the way to Porthmadog via Beddgelert, a route of 25 miles. It currently goes as far as Waunfawr , but is hoped to reach the village of Rhyd-Ddu, starting point for southerly ascents of Snowdon, in the near future. That said, timescales are constantly slipping as the project remains mired in much controversy.
