In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the town of HAVERFORDWEST (Hwlffordd), ten miles north of Pembroke, prospered as a port and trading centre, but despite its natural advantages, it is scarcely a place to linger. A cursory look at the dingy shell of the thirteenth-century castle and the less-than-exciting town museum (Easter-Oct Mon-Sat 10am-4pm; £1) is enough, though as the main transport hub and shopping centre for western Pembrokeshire you are likely to pass through.
The tourist office (May-Sept Mon-Sat 10am-5.30pm; Oct-April Mon-Sat 10am-4pm; tel 01437/763110) is next to the bus terminus, at the end of the Old Bridge. There's also a highly informative National Park office at 40 High St. Next to the tourist office, the Holiday Information Centre includes an excellent booking agency for self-catering cottages in Pembrokeshire (tel 01437/765765).
Four miles northeast of town, along the B4329, Scolton Manor (April-Oct Tues-Sun 9am-6pm; £2) is a modest stately home that now forms the nucleus of the diverting Pembrokeshire County Museum . Aside from the enchanting period rooms indoors, outhouses showcase all manner of quirky exhibits, and there is a good café and an environmentally aware visitor centre onsite.
