Fifteen miles east of Carmarthen, the main street - Rhosmaen Street - of the handsome small market town of LLANDEILO climbs up from the Tywi bridge. Although there is little in the way of actual sights in the town, Llandeilo is brilliantly situated in a bowl of hills, a quiet, rustic place whose few streets cluster around the main thoroughfare. Behind the main street are the tourist office (Easter-Oct Mon-Sat 10am-5pm; tel 01558/824226) in the principal car park and, a couple of blocks to the north, the train station .
A mile west of Llandeilo is the gorgeous parkland of Plas Dinefwr , site also of two splendid castles. On a wooded bluff above the Tywi sits the tumbledown shell of Dinefwr Old Castle which became ill-suited to the needs of the landowning Rhys family, who aspired to something a little more luxurious. The "new" castle, now named Newton House (April-Oct Mon & Thurs-Sun 11am-5pm; house & park £3, park only £2; NT), was built in 1523, and given a new limestone facade in the 1860s.
