PONTYPRIDD , twelve miles north of Cardiff, is built up around its quirky arched bridge . Once the largest single-span stone bridge in Europe, it was built in 1775 by local amateur stonemason William Edwards, whose previous attempts had crumbled into the river below. Across the river is Ynysangharad Park , where Sir W. Goscombe John's gooey statue honours Pontypridd weaver Evan James, who composed the stirringly nationalistic song Hen Wlad fy Nhadau (Land of My Fathers) that has become the Welsh national anthem. By the bridge at the end of Taff Street, a lovingly restored church houses the Pontypridd Museum (Mon-Sat 10am-5pm; free), one of the best museums in the Valleys. A treasure trove of photographs, videos, models and exhibits succeeds in painting a warm and human picture of the town and its outlying valleys, as well as paying homage to the town's famous sons, singer Tom Jones and opera star and actor Sir Geraint Evans.
Pontypridd is well connected to bus, train and road networks. The tourist office (Mon-Sat 10am-5pm; tel 01443/490748) is in the museum, on Bridge Street. Accommodation is rather scarce in the town centre.
